A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.
The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in national works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
