Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
