Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner States Unilever Blocked Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
One of the co-founders of the famous ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner Unilever prevented the launch for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, disclosed how he will personally create the controversial product within an individual series showcasing causes the company was prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Founders versus Parent Company
This latest announcement escalates the continuing tension among the world-famous dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
The co-founders maintain how Unilever and its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming an Emblem of Solidarity
Mr. Cohen revealed through social media how he is creating a new watermelon-based sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol for support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, that closely resemble those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Changes
Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in territories occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever transferring their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales in disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand that originally created several years back for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Changes plus Future Plans
The founder stated how he plans to create additional ice cream flavors that address concerns which the company was prevented from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
This development follows partner Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after decades of involvement, citing concerns regarding how the company's autonomy was compromised after corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen commented how "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to keep working within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can fulfill the social mission, the values that it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to media outlets.
