Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these drugs should be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
