Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Fears He Could Ruin the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a role you portrayed in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.
An Unexpected Comeback for Fallon Characters
It has been established that a trio of distinct characters from past films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, even though dying in previous installments. The precise method of their return remains a mystery. Audiences should prepare for the reappearance of the beloved and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Legendary Status
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a brief appearance is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The performer vividly recalls the precise instant he got the offer from the original writer.
"I recall the conversation. I recall the small talk. I remember him posing the question. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he says. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the decades since the 1996 movie was released, which made Lillard feeling quite nervous.
"The reality is, that's a role that lives in infamy, like it or not," he explains. "A part that is now represented in every single Scream mask that appears every Halloween."
The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fans
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the final product. He admits to feeling immense anxiety about hoping not to be the one who ruins the popular series.
"The outcome is either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will gonna work. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Run High
While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return remains. Perhaps they live rent-free in Sidney's mind, like a prior storyline. Alternatively, maybe they are somehow still living in a strange communal situation. The chance of a meta-horror story, inspired by classic horror movies, also is on the table.
Moviegoers will find out the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
