What We Know Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the shooting, stating they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
